Ostend: a street art paradise

The coastal city of Ostend is Belgiums most famous place to spot street art from various world famous artists at a large scale. Literary and figuratively speaking as there are more than 50 permanent artworks of which the highest measures 40 meters. Ostend is situated only half an hour by car from the French boarder and half an hour from Bruges.

Start your individual street art tour at the Ostend Tourism office where you can get a free walking (and cycling) map to plan your tour through the open-air exhibition of The Crystal Ship. This map contains detailed information about the more than 50 artworks with the exact location on one side, and the artist name, nationality and background information on the other (shown on the picture below). In this blog I only share some of my favourites.

The artworks made by the Uruguayan Colectivo Licuado brighten up the streets of the capital of Montevideo and far beyond. Camilo and Florencia aim to give colour to public and private places, and succeeded at this for sure by creating this beautiful mural.

These ladies represent the sea and storm, a tribute to the maritime sector of this city.

The Moroccan born and Spanish based artist Mohamed l'Ghacham captures memories and everyday family scenes with an underlying message.

The French Miss Van creates colourful female figures with all sorts of masks, hats and different hairstyles. This work is called 'Moth Muse'.

Fabio and Elodieloll of Dourone called their artwork OPIA, which stands for the ambiguous intensity of looking someone in the eyes...

The recurring themes in their portraits are freedom, respect and diversity.

TelmoMiel are two Rotterdam based Dutch artist who created two artworks on one building in Ostend. Each work shows a girl with umbrella and a monkey. I like how they adapted their work to the shape of the building.
